Guwahati, Assam, India - The "Jurassic" franchise has been on a wild ride of its own, but with "Jurassic World Rebirth," the seventh installment directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, it seems to have found a stronger footing. This standalone sequel, released on July 4, 2025, in India, offers a refreshing return to form, focusing on suspense and genuine thrills with a new, compelling cast.
"Rebirth" takes place five years after the events of "Jurassic World Dominion," in a world where dinosaurs are no longer quite so prevalent. Most have struggled with the planet's climate and diseases, finding refuge in isolated equatorial zones. One such place is Île Saint Hubert, an island that once housed a secret research facility and is now a thriving, dangerous haven for various prehistoric creatures, including some terrifying new "mutants."
The plot kicks into gear when the morally ambiguous pharmaceutical company Parking, headed by Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), contracts Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), a skilled covert operations expert, for a high-stakes mission. Her objective: to extract vital DNA samples from three colossal dinosaur species – a land-dwelling Titanosaurus, an aquatic Mosasaurus, and an airborne Quetzalcoatlus. These samples are believed to hold the key to groundbreaking medical advancements, promising immense profits.
Zora's team includes her reliable right-hand man, Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), and the enthusiastic paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), whose struggling museum could greatly benefit from this expedition. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a civilian family whose sailboat has capsized after a terrifying encounter with an aquatic dinosaur, stranding them on the perilous island. This forces the team to navigate not only the dangerous dinos but also the added responsibility of civilian survival.
Director Gareth Edwards, known for his work on "Godzilla" and "Rogue One," brings a grounded and intense feel to "Rebirth." He masterfully utilizes practical effects and atmospheric lighting to create truly babysitting sequences that recapture the chilling suspense of the original "Jurassic Park." The dinosaurs feel imposing and dangerous, with new "mutant" designs adding a fresh layer of terror. The film features several standout moments, including a particularly harrowing encounter with the aquatic creature and a classic T-Rex chase that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
The new cast is a significant strength. Scarlett Johansson delivers a strong performance as Zora, portraying her with a no-nonsense competence that makes her an engaging lead. Mahershala Ali brings his characteristic depth and gravitas to Duncan, adding a surprising emotional core to the action. Jonathan Bailey's Dr. Loomis is a delightful addition, providing moments of awe and scientific curiosity that help balance the film's darker elements.
While "Rebirth" largely succeeds in its mission, it isn't without its familiar "Jurassic" tropes. The corporate greed motive feels a bit rehashed, and the subplot involving the stranded family, though adding stakes, sometimes feels less integrated into the main narrative. Some moments of awe, while visually impressive, occasionally lack the intimate, character-driven impact of the original.
However, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a thrilling and highly entertaining return for the franchise. "Jurassic World Rebirth" strips away some of the bloat of its predecessors, opting for a more focused and suspenseful adventure. It’s a compelling monster movie that reminds us why we fell in love with dinosaurs in the first place, proving that the "Jurassic" series still has plenty of roar left in it.
